I am trying a new thing this summer; a little something I am calling my Summer Prescription. Because for too many seasons – particularly since my little girl was born – the cushions in my deck chairs remain un-bum-dented (a word, if you ask me), and my giant hammock not stretched taut by the sprawl of legs and arms and a really juicy book. I have a tendency to forget strawberry season, and blueberry season, and to overlook the fact that I live five minutes away from a shallow, warm lake that practically begs to be swum in.
Sometimes I’m not entirely sure what I do end up doing all summer, with my head buried in my routine, but all too often I wake up one morning and the air breezing through the bedroom window has an edge of Fall in it, and I have the urge to put on a scarf – the lack of need to do which, incidentally, might be the only thing I don’t like about summer.
This year, I’m doing summer like it’s my job. Every week, I pick a few quintessentially summery activities to dedicate some time to. This week, it’s spending half an hour in my hammock, half an hour on the front deck, and going for a swim at the lake.
It seems to be going well so far, and the satisfaction of making the most of the few warm days that grace this corner of the world is disproportionately elating.
This cake comes from one of my favourite food bloggers, the woman behind Roaming Kitchen, an exquisite – truly, truly exquisite – writer and talented culinarian. I really didn’t make any modifications to the recipe; you can find it here. It was completely delectable.
Jess, your summer prescription is just what I needed to read. It’s so easy to focus on work and routine, and forget that summer joys like warm lakes and blueberries deserve our attention just as much, and maybe more. Thank you for this reminder! And I’m so glad you enjoyed the cake; your kind words mean the world to me.
Thanks so much for reading Cristina! I just love your blog and look forward to reading what you’ve written every time – you have a beautiful way with words that I can only aspire to! I hope you’re enjoying your summer. Let me know how your “summer prescription” works :o)
so glad I found you (through Ms Movita) AND this recipe. THANK YOU
YES.—let’s keep sharing the goodies in this world—

and one more month of summer!!!!
Haha, awesome! Thanks for reading Teri! I’m so glad you found me too. Isn’t Movita awesome? Love love LOVE reading her blog – it cracks me up every time!
Hey….I’m pretty sure I had a piece of that delicious cake?! Shared with your doulas perhaps? It was so good. Love your summer prescription. I am currently on vacation and seem to have a knack for putting undue pressure on myself to “Enjoy summer or else” that I kinda ruin it. Why does summer have to be so short?
You sure did eat that cake! Good thing I got pictures of it before it smashed on the way to the CFC….and that there was enough icing on it to hide the damage once I got there!
