Warm Spiced Almond Milk

Warm Spiced Almond Milk | www.purplehousecafe.com

Sometimes you just need a little comfort at the end of a long day. Like a hug that wraps you tight or the familiarity of your favourite pj’s, this spiced almond milk is nourishment and nurturing, all in one mug. It’s not an extravagant indulgence, really, so feel free to make it part of your nightly routine. You might find that just the thought of winding down with a warm drink is relaxing, all on its own.

It seems silly to call this a recipe, perhaps: just fill your favourite mug with almond milk. Pour in about a half teaspoon of vanilla extract, a few sprinkles of cinnamon and a few of cardamom. Warm in the microwave for about 2-3 minutes, and sweeten with honey.

Mom’s Rhubarb Punch

Mom's Rhubarb Punch | www.purplehousecafe.com

It might be getting a little too late for rhubarb, but I’m hoping, if you’re anything like me, that you’ve purchased or plucked extra rosy-green stalks and chopped and frozen or boiled down and canned a few to enjoy in the all-too-many months that rhubarb isn’t in season.

So, with that in mind, here’s one last rhubarb recipe from me this year.  It’s one of the things my mom is most famous for, along with chocolate zucchini cake and world-class soil science research.  No biggie, right?

Christmas Morning Dark Chocolate Mint and Vanilla Cinnamon Coffee Syrups

It’s almost Christmas, friends.  Have you thought about how you’re going to stay awake when your children get you up at 4:30a.m. to see what’s under the tree?

Chocolate Mint and Vanilla Cinnamon Coffee Syrup | www.purplehousecafe.com

Based on my 2:30?  3:30? – I can hardly remember – wake-up call last year (by a wee yearling who didn’t know anything about Christmas but certainly knew that she wanted to be awake and hanging out with her mama and daddy), whatever you normally drink to rev you up in the morning might need a special little twist this Christmas.

Homemade Egg Nog

Homemade Egg Nog | www.purplehousecafe.com

Maybe –  just maybe – you don’t already have a go-to recipe for homemade egg nog.  Maybe you pour whipping cream and brandy and shake nutmeg and cinnamon into your blender on December 1st every year and haven’t looked back.  Or, more rather, haven’t looked twice at the festively decorated cartons of egg nog that start cropping up in grocery stores sometime after Halloween, increasing, over the years, in variety and number.  But, if you’ve never made your own egg nog, don’t let the soy peppermint cinnamon dolce egg-free stuff at your local grocer fool you.  It is not food, and will taste just like soy peppermint cinnamon dolce egg-free egg nog, and you’ll wonder “how did they get it to taste like that,” and you’ll agree with me that making one’s own is worth the shame of going to the grocery store only to buy whipping cream, an 18-pack of eggs, and brandy.  And rum.  But you probably had that at home anyway.
